Hunting Park in the News
Philadelphia Weekly featured a cover story on Hunting Park for its January 6th-12th, 2010 edition. Click here to read Tara Murtha's report on how the 87-acre park is a major part of this North Philadelphia neighborhood's transformation.
The Fairmount Park Conservancy and a team of partners completed the first ever comprehensive revitalization plan for historic Hunting Park in North Philadelphia. On Saturday, October 17th the Conservancy unveiled the Master Plan in Hunting Park during Greater Philadelphia Cares Day. The Master Plan was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Comcast, Patricia Kind and PECO. Wells Appel served as the lead consultant for the development of the Master Plan and staff from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Philadelphia Green program conducted a robust community engagement process in conjunction with the plan development that resulted in the creation of Hunting Park United, a park friends group that will function as a direct liaison to the community. The Master Plan addresses capital improvements, park maintenance, expanded programming and safety issues that together will create a healthier and safer park for the surrounding community.
Some of the first recommendations of the plan are already underway thanks to the support of The Ryan Howard Family Foundation, Citizens Bank and the Conservancy’s Growing the Neighborhood program, which is sponsored by ACE Group, NovaCare Rehabilitation, PRWT Services, Inc., and U.S. Facilities, Inc. Projects include the restoration of Hunting Park’s baseball field, the creation of a new multi-use field and park-wide landscape maintenance. FEATURED PROJECT
Erase Your Trace
The Fairmount Park Conservancy is partnering with Mayor Nutter's Office of Sustainability in establishing a local carbon offset market that will raise money for tree planting in Philadelphia. Erase Your Trace is an online tool that will help Philadelphians calculate their annual carbon dioxide emissions and then help offset them through local tree planting efforts. Using the CarbonPlus Calculator developed by the U.S. Forest Service, Erase Your Trace is a fun and flexible tool that enables users to donate the full cost of their annual carbon emissions or a portion to offset specific activities such as vehicle use or airplane travel. For more information please visit www.eraseyourtrace.org.
Founded in 2000, the Fairmount Park Conservancy is an independent nonprofit organization that seeks to foster an ongoing partnership between the public and private sectors to reclaim Fairmount Park as a focal point for Philadelphia's economic development and neighborhood renewal.
